Theatre & Interpretation Major: General

Why study theatre and interpretation at CMU?

The theatre and interpretation program at CMU offers many performance, design, and technical opportunities inside and outside the classroom for students to prepare for a variety of theatre-related careers. The program offers:

  • Faculty and staff dedicated to developing performance and production talents
  • Scholarships specifically for theatre and interpretation students
  • Technical theatre support facilities, including a scene shop, costume shop, and rehearsal rooms
  • Participation in several theatre production programs, including the University Theatre, Studio Theatre Series, and the CMU Summer Theatre

Career outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, for all occupations through the year 2014:

  • Employment of actors, producers, and directors is expected to grow nine to 17 percent.
  • Venues for live entertainment, such as Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres, touring productions, and repertory theatres in many major metropolitan areas, as well as theme parks and resorts, are expected to offer many job opportunities.
  • Many workers have formal training, but experience, talent, creativity, and professionalism are the factors that are most important in getting many jobs in this industry.
