American Sign Language minor

Why study American Sign Language at CMU?

This program helps students acquire conversational skills in American Sign Language and develop an appreciation and understanding of the way in which people in the deaf community live, think, and communicate. Consider these key features distinguishing this program:

  • Excellent complement to many health and human services programs, including CMU's renowned doctor of audiology and master of arts in speech-language pathology graduate programs
  • DeafBlind Central, the only program in Michigan to offer support for families and professionals associated with visually and hearing impaired children and young adults
  • Opportunities for research with faculty who specialize in diagnosing and treating communication disorders
  • Professional development, resources, and contacts through student organizations such as the American Sign Language Society

Career outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, for all occupations through the year 2014:

  • Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to increase 18 to 26 percent.
  • Contributing to this projected growth are laws such as the American with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act, which mandate that an interpreter is available in certain situations for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
  • Increased awareness of the importance of early identification and diagnosis of speech and language disorders also will increase employment opportunities.
