New CMU students have to fulfill the university's competency requirement in written English.
The CLEP English Composition Examination with Essay is administered throughout the year electronically. Students are encouraged to take the test during the summer before their first semester of enrollment.
Registration materials and more information are available from the Computer-Based Testing Office .
Transfer students may submit prior CLEP or AP scores when they transfer for evaluation.
Oral English
To "test out" of CMU's oral English competency requirement a student must prepare a 10- to 15-minute informative or persuasive speech and deliver it before a judge. The student selects the topic for the speech and identifies the audience. Exam results are reported in writing to the student. A student who does not pass may retest only once.
Each student registering for the Oral English Competency Test is given a detailed explanation of the criteria used by the judge in evaluating these speeches.
Students wanting to take this exam must do so before they earn 54 hours of college credit. Students who transfer more than 54 hours of college credit to CMU must take this exam during their first CMU semester. Appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis; the test is offered twice a year just prior to the fall and spring semesters.
Each student must also obtain a screening for possible speech and hearing disorders. Screenings are available at a low cost at the CMU Speech and Hearing Clinic .
Registration forms are available in the Office of Academic Affairs, Warriner Hall 312, 989-774-3631.
