Directing a women's
suffrage workshop
Teacher Education
Shane Cavanaugh, assistant professor of
teacher education and professional
development, earned a $56,667 National
Endowment for the Humanities grant for her
Winning the Vote: The Women’s Suffrage
Movement in the United States, a weeklong
faculty humanities workshop in which
participants looked at the social and
political implications of the women’s
suffrage movement through first-hand
documents, historical re-enactments, oral
history projects, and fictional works from
the movement.
Why it’s unique
Cavanaugh’s workshop was designated a “We
the People” project for encouraging and
strengthening the teaching, study, and
understanding of American history and
culture.
Significance
“The grant represents a significant effort
to integrate an important, yet often
neglected, part of American history into
Michigan classrooms.”
