Minghui Chai: Patenting dendrimer applications in drug delivery

Chemistry
Assistant professor of chemistry Minghui Chai has received a provisional patent for her work synthesizing and characterizing dendrimers and their interaction with drugs and dyes. She has received 12 grants during her professional career, including five current awards totaling more than $250,000.

Significance
Chai and her student researcher are the first to put L-Dopa – a drug important to people with Parkinson’s disease – into a dendritic form at the molecular level.

What are the possibilities for this research?
The use of the dendritic form allows the fabrication and controlled release of a drug. This is expected to have great potential for new drugs and the pharmaceutical industry
as a whole.
