Scholarly Endeavors Distinguish CMU

CMU's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is pleased to share on these pages one of CMU's best kept secrets - the extraordinary high level and diversity of scholarly activity by our faculty, students, and staff.

Did you know that a CMU professor is a key participant in trying to bring peace to the war-torn Dafur region of Somalia? That our campus has one of only twelve full-body scanners in the U.S.? That our chemistry faculty members have developed processes and are securing patents for applications ranging from new drug delivery methods to removing environmental pollutants? That CMU students record, produce, and release music of student and faculty artists under our own recording labels? These are but a few of many exciting activities occurring on campus.

Along with teaching and public service, the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and artistic works is one of the three basic functions of a major university. At CMU, we see our research obligation as a way to enhance the quality of the education we provide our students. A student learns a tremendous amount by being involved in a research or creative project. CMU faculty members are strongly encouraged to both supervise student research projects and also to involve students in their own research and creative activities - undergraduates as well as graduate students. Last year more than 700 students presented their research or creative works at the annual student research exhibition on campus; 32 were asked to display their work at the State Capitol in Lansing.

We hope this Web site will give you a sense of this high level of scholarly activity.
