Michael Pisani: Documenting the positive influence of microfinance

International Business
Michael J. Pisani’s field research on more than 500 micro and small businesses in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, reveals that access to microfinance has enabled micro-entrepreneurs to start, expand, and develop their micro-enterprises while simultaneously enhancing the standard of living in their households. Pisani, associate professor of international business at CMU, also has undertaken micro-finance field research in El Salvador, Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.

What Pisani’s research shows
“Micro-finance is working to reduce poverty in Nicaragua.”

What are micro-finance institutions?
These institutions are involved in delivery of relatively small business loans (e.g., $10-$500+) to micro-entrepreneurs globally at local market rates. Access to micro-finance is seen as a means of reducing poverty by supporting very small enterprises that have been shut out of traditional financial markets.
