Campus Jargon
- Add/Drop: The process during registration where courses are added or dropped from a student's schedule
- Beaver Island: CMU is fortunate enough to own a 46-acre Biological Station on Beaver Island. It is home to summer classes, research projects, and off-campus training for campus groups.
- Blue Book: A ruled paper booklet used in some classes for essay tests.
- Bulletin: Official location of all CMU policies and course descriptions as well as academic majors and minors available at CMU.
- Campus ID: Formally known as the Chip ID, this is a CMU student's access to everything. Not only does the card get you in to any athletic event at no cost, it also allows you to check out books and eat in the dining commons.
- Centralight: CMU's alumni magazine that is published three times a year.
- CMICH: The CMU website (www.cmich.edu).
- CM Life: Central Michigan Life Newspaper, printed three times a week at no cost to the community.
- Deskie: Also known as a desk worker, this title is given to those who work in the residence halls at the front desk.
- Down Under: A food court located on the lower level of the Bovee University Center.
- ET: Engineering & Technology Building.
- Fire Up: A traditional way to end a sentence. Instead of saying "way to go", you would say "fire up!"
- Global ID: This is used to access email along with any other CMU computer system. It is the first five digits of your last name, a number, first initial, and middle initial.
- GPA: Grade point average.
- Greeks: The members of social fraternities and sororities.
- IAC: Indoor Athletic Complex. IAC is home to CMU athletes. They can study, workout, and train in this facility. It is also home to an indoor track and football field.
- Intramurals: With one of the largest programs in the United States, the CMU Intramurals Program features football, golf, softball, soccer, and many more sports. Any CMU student can participate on an intramural team.
- MA: Abbreviation for Multicultural Advisor. There is one MA in each residence hall. They conduct culture-related programs.
- MHTV: Moore Hall Television Stations, where CMU students develop and air shows.
- OTF: On The Fly Productions, a campus organization responsible for campus and residence hall programming.
- PBS: CMU is home to the largest university-operated public broadcasting network in the United States, with six TV and seven radio stations serving northern Michigan.
- ProfEd: Professional Education. CMU has one of the largest extended learning programs in the country with over 60 locations in 48 states and several international sites.
- RA: Resident Assistant.
- ResLife: Office of Residence Life.
- RHA: Residence Hall Assembly, a recognized student organization working for the students living in the residence halls.
- RHD: Residence Hall Director.
- RSO: Registered Student Organization.
- SAC: Student Activity Center
- SAPA: Sexual Assault Peer Advocates.
- SBX: Student Book Exchange, the off-campus bookstore located on north campus.
- SGA: Student Government Association.
- SmartZone: Designated by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) as one of only 11 "SmartZones" across the state, the Center for Applied Research and Technology at CMU is focused on attracting and stimulating high-tech businesses that require a synergistic relationship with a research-intensive university like CMU.
- Townsend KIVA: A completely circular auditorium located in Moore Hall.
- UC: Bovee University Center.
- UREC: Office of University Recreation.
- Warriner Mall: Located in front of Warriner Hall, it is the original grass courtyard (or mall) on campus.
