President's Statement
To the Campus Community:
Central Michigan University is vulnerable. At any moment, CMU may be threatened by an emergency or disaster situation, whether it be a flood, tornado, accident involving hazardous materials, resource shortage, civil disorder, or terrorist threat. Consequently, university offices have been collaboratively working to identify resources, communication plans, and courses of action, and to build solid relationships with local and state agencies to bolster our preparedness efforts.
While there is no reason to believe that Central Michigan University is subject to any specific threat or danger at this moment, it is important that plans have been developed as a proactive means of emergency preparedness. The reality of events in the world today requires CMU to seriously consider safety and security issues, and to proactively plan for and address incidents as part of its overall efforts to advance the university's mission.
These pages on Emergency Preparedness help establish a framework to ensure that Central Michigan University is prepared to deal with critical incidents that require extraordinary protection of life, property, and/or continuity of operations. The site provides an integrated approach to respond to and recover from the effects of a crisis on campus, in coordination with federal and local authorities.
Please invest some time to review the many resources available through university training. Become familiar with the emergency action plans for the buildings you frequent, and become actively involved in the development of your department/college business continuation plan. Each one of us should take responsibility for being prepared, for our own safety and for that of others.
