Wireless
Wireless access is provided by the Office of Information Technology to allow for seamless roaming for mobile users across campus. Wireless network cards should be WiFi compliant. All access points support 802.11a,b/g and in some locations, n. Use of the Wireless system is subject to the terms of the Responsible Use of Computing, CSA and Port Registration, and Network Bandwidth Quota System.
Wireless Availability
Most indoor CMU campus locations should have wireless availability. Due to environmental conditions and heavy user density issues at some locations connectivity issues may arise. If you are having connectivity issues please contact the CMU Help Desk (989-774-3662). Density issues are being addressed during network upgrades based on usage patterns.Off Campus

Support
Due to the wide verity of wireless devices/configurations CMU will attempt but not guarantee support of all wireless devices, contact the Help Desk at (989) 774-3662 for further details. We recommended Windows XP operating with the manufactures internal wireless adapter, with all current patches and driver updates, configured for Windows to control wireless configuration.
Configuration
Cmich GOLD
This is the preferred way to connect to the CMU Wireless Network. Cmich Gold offers better performance because 802.11 B in NOT supported. Cmich Gold requires WPA2 encryption, 802.11 A or G and allows for 802.11 N on both frequency's where available.
SSID Cmich GOLD will require manual configuration once detected as follows. Select the guide below that reflects your operating system.
CMICH_OPENThe SSID for the general wireless access is cmich_open, it supports all 802.11 A,B,G and N devices. Due to the lack of direct encryption this SSID is considered not secure and should not be used for sensitive information.
SSID cmich_open configuration should be auto detected by most operating systems. If you need to configure it manually, set the authentication to "open" and the encryption to none.
After you select cmich_open, bring up your web browser and it should be redirected to a login screen. The user's global ID and password are needed to authenticate. The user's authentication credentials are encrypted but the rest of the traffic is not unless the applications have encryption built in (e.g. going to a secure web site (lock is closed in your web browser)).
CMICHThe SSID cmich supports all 802.11 ABG and N wireless signals, It also supports WPA and WPA2 encryption. Users will have reduced performance if 802.11 B devices are operating in the same area. If your wireless device supports 802.11 A or G and WPA2 we strongly recommend the use Cmich GOLD. This SSID should only be used for legacy devices lacking capabilities to use Cmich GOLD but still requiring encryption.
SSID cmich will require manual configuration once detected as follows. Select the guide below that reflects your operating system.
Special Wireless Usage
Central Michigan University Information Technology will attempt to accommodate special wireless needs, such as temporary access for non-CMU users, additional SSID’s, special security needs, temporary access points, wireless labs and wireless scanners. Please contact the Help Desk as (989) 774-3662 with your request.
