Spanish-Lanugage Study Grants for Faculty
DEADLINE for Applications: NOVEMBER 6, 2009 Apply here.If you are a CMU faculty member with some Spanish language ability who would like to improve your Spanish in order to introduce more content related to Latin America; to participate in campus activities related to Spanish speaking students, Latin America or the Spanish language; to develop a faculty-led short-term study abroad course in Latin America; or to be able to recruit or mentor students from Latin America, you may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 to support studying Spanish in Latin America. The grants are one component of CMU's Vision 2010 Latino/Latin American Initiative Project. The following criteria apply:
- To be eligible, faculty must score at least high enough on the language placement test used at CMU to enter SPN 102. Advanced fluency in Spanish is not a requirement (and fluent speakers are not the target group for this grant). For information on how to take the WebCape Online Placement Test, click here.
- The period in which the grant recipient remains in a Latin American country must equal or exceed 30 days and must include at least 20 days of instruction in the language.
- Grants will be for a maximum of $3,000 per person and may include tuition, lodging, and transportation from the U.S. to the country in which the recipient is studying. Food and transportation within the host country will not be paid for by the grant. (It is anticipated that recipients will find other sources of support and may need to cover some costs with personal funds.)
Applicants should propose their own locations for the study of Spanish and related information about the type of study they will undertake and the proposed dates of study as part of their applications. Any location may be proposed, but suggestions are available from the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Study Abroad staff of the Office of International Affairs with respect to current programs.
