Definition of Sexual Assault:
Any time anyone does anything of a sexual nature without the expressed consent of the other person.
Facts and Statistics
- 56% of all females will be confronted or hurt sexually
- Over 3 million women will be assaulted this year
- Of these women who are assaulted, only 1 in 100 will report it to the police if victimized
- by date/acquaintance
- Fewer than 30 out of 100 women assaulted by a stranger come forward
- 84% of women assaulted knew their assailant
- The emotional trauma is generally more long-term when the victim knows the perpetrator
- Most victims never tell anyone about the assault - about 50%
- Assault victims account for approximately 70% of all suicide attempts
- Very seldom are the reports of sexual assault false accusations - approximately 5-6%
- 4 out of 10 men would rape under certain circumstances

Rape on College Campuses
- The number of survivors who report on college campuses is lower because of fear of recognition
- One in four college women surveyed are victims of rape or attempted rape
- 85% of rapes on campuses are acquaintance/ date rapes
- 84% of college men who committed rape said that what they did was definitely not rape
- 42% of college women who are raped do not tell anyone about the assault
- 5% of college women who are raped report the rape to the police; 5% report it to a rape crisis center
- 1 out of every 15 college men reported committing a rape or attempting to commit rape the proceeding year
- 75% of the assailants and 55% of the survivors had been drinking at the time of the assault
- The risk of being raped is 4 times greater for women aged 16 to 24 then for any other age group
