In an effort to further the GEAR UP mission, Central Michigan University's GEAR UP program hosted GEAR UP and You Day on October 27th, 2012. Eighth grade students from Flint and Harrison schools participated in a day-long event introducing them to college life. Students ate in an on-campus residence hall cafeteria, took a tour of campus, participated in a diversity workshop and attended a CMU football game.
The diversity workshop began with a speaker and video about diversity topics, including stereotypes , biases and how to be an ally, followed by presentation by CMU's Native American Programs.
One student reflected on the day saying "I really enjoyed GEAR UP & You Day. I loved the workshops and being able to work with students. I believe that CMU should do something like once a year. I was also very pleased with the football game and think that it was a great idea. Thank you again GEAR UP!"
