CMU names finalists in provost search

Finalists seeking to become Central Michigan University’s next executive vice president/provost will visit campus in April for interviews and open forums. The finalists were identified following a national search with the assistance of Parker Executive Search, an Atlanta-based search firm.

Candidates, the dates of their campus visits and open forums include:

• Alan R. White, dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and professor of biology at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. White’s forum is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Ausable Room of the Bovee University Center.
  
  White has held his current position since 2005. Additional higher education experience includes positions at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., and Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va.

• Karen B. Schmaling, former vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of psychology at Washington State University Vancouver. Schmaling’s forum is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Ausable Room of the Bovee University Center.
  
  Schmaling’s additional higher education experience includes positions at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of Texas at El Paso, University of Washington School of Medicine in Spokane, Wash., and the University of Colorado in Denver.

• Michael A. Gealt, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and professor of biology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock will visit campus for a series of interviews and an open forum April 24. Gealt’s open forum will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Ausable Room of the Bovee University Center.
  
  In addition to the University of Arkansas, Gealt also has held positions at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Ind., and Drexel University in Philadephia.

The executive vice president/provost leads the university’s academic division, including the seven academic colleges, the College of Graduate Studies, Global Campus, research and sponsored programs, libraries, institutional diversity, international education, academic administration, academic affairs, information technology, and student publications.

As executive vice president, the person in this position is the second highest ranking administrator at the university after the president and coordinates the team of senior staff who are responsible for achieving the University’s major goals.

Executive Vice President/Provost E. Gary Shapiro announced in September that he would leave the position at the end of the current academic year to return to the classroom. Shapiro has served in a variety of positions since joining CMU in 1978.
