University Theatre presents a season of eight major productions during the academic year. These productions are faculty-directed and choreographed, and include six theatre productions and two dance concerts. The season usually contains a musical produced jointly with the CMU School of Music, a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production which tours area schools in alternate years, a revival from the previous summer season, and other productions chosen to provide students with a variety of performance opportunities.
In addition to the regular season, faculty and students have the opportunity to mount small-scale productions as part of the Studio Theatre program. These productions receive limited financial support from University Theatre and are designed to be showcases for director-actor interaction.
University Theatre also presents a three-play Summer Theatre season. Each year, 12-15 students are hired to form a production company working with faculty and staff directors and designers to present the plays both on-campus and on tour to Whitehall and Sturgis, MI. The actor-technicians in the company receive extensive experience in performance and technical production; in addition, up to 6 hours of TAI credit--paid for by CMU--are available to student company members.
Dance productions in the University Theatre season are presented by the University Theatre Dance Company, a student company modeled on professional dance companies.
