School Counseling Program

A Masters of Arts in School Counseling

The School Counseling option is designed for students with Teacher Certification who wish to earn a School Counselor Endorsement. Potential work settings would include: elementary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, or K-12 schools. School Counseling graduates will meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan.

CED 650        (3)   Theories and Techniques of Group Counseling
CED 660        (3)   Counseling Techniques
CED 677        (3)   Theories of Counseling
CED 690        (3)   Counseling Practicum
CED/SPE 695 (3) Research for Counseling and Special Education
CED 765        (3) Professional Counseling and Consulting

Additional Requirements (6 hours)

CED 545        (3) School Counseling Seminar

Electives (3 hours)

Select other CED courses, approved SPE courses, or approved transfer credits to bring credit hour total to at least 48.

Plan B Requirement (6 hours)

CED 691 (6) Internship in Counseling
    AND
Comprehensive Examination

Course Options & Preliminary Authorizations

Preliminary Employment Authorization to Work as a School Counselor
(leading to counselor licensure)

(This is the same as the pink colored handout available at the departmental office)
This course outline is for CMU Counseling Students without teacher certification, so that they may obtain preliminary employment authorization to work as a school counselor upon completion of 39 graduate credit hours. Additional credits are required for the M.A. in Counseling degree and for school counselor licensure.

Preliminary Employment Authorization to Work as a School Counselor
(leading to counselor endorsement)

This course outline is for CMU Counseling Students who possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, so that they may obtain preliminary employment authorization to work as a school counselor upon completion of 33 graduate credit hours. Additional credits are required for the M.A. in Counseling degree and for school counselor endorsement.
Current Professional Counseling Students Seeking School Counseling Licensure
(This is the same as the blue colored handout available at the departmental office)
This course outline is for current CMU Professional Counseling Students without teacher certification, who also wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
Returning CMU Professional Counseling Graduates with a 48-hour Degree Seeking School Counseling Licensure
(This is the same as the tan colored handout available at the departmental office)
This course outline is for past CMU students who earned a M.A. in Counseling Degree (in the Professional Counseling concentration), do not have teacher certification, and wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
Returning CMU Counseling Graduates with a Degree of Less than 48 Hours Seeking School Counseling Licensure
(This is the same as the goldenrod colored handout available at the departmental office)
This course outline is for past CMU students who earned a M.A. in Counseling Degree that was less than 48 hours, do not have teacher certification, and wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
