User experience lead for IDV Solutions in Lansing

How CMU prepared him for his career

“Professional and personal relationships with instructors and mentors persist to this day and have been the source of continued inspiration and insight. In short, my experience at CMU has not just provided me with correct answers, but has enabled me to ask more revealing questions.”

One piece of advice

“Work on an independent project not directly assigned as course work or as part of the formal degree program. The pursuit of a passion invites an education beyond the syllabus, engenders insight from advisors, and is symptomatic of enthusiasm and motivation.”

Involvement as a CMU student

“While working towards my graduate degree, I created as an aside an interactive atlas of the United States. At the recommendation of an advisor this atlas was submitted to compete for the National Geographic Society Award for Cartography, which it won in 2004. I was encouraged to write a grant for the funding to produce and distribute copies of this atlas to schools throughout Michigan. This atlas continues to be a resource for educators throughout the country.”

Biggest professional accomplishment

“My degree, and the position it has afforded, delivers consistent gratification from a varying array of clients in a broad set of industries. More recently, I have been proud to work with a major metropolitan police force’s counterterrorism unit in the effort to prevent radiological attack.”

Why he studied at CMU for a science-related degree

"The geography department at CMU is among the top in the nation and the research interests of the faculty were closely aligned with mine.”
