If you're like most students, scholarships will provide an important part of your financial aid package.
The CMU Department of Mathematics offers a number of scholarships – based on need, academic focus, career aspirations and other specific criteria – for incoming freshman, transfer students and continuing students.

Department Scholarships
Many of the CMU Department of Mathematics scholarships are renewable, but require submission of a new application each year.
Application. Applications for department scholarships are accepted between November 15 and February 7 annually. Submit only ONE scholarship application even if you are applying for more than one mathematics scholarship.
- Please note: The deadline for submitting applications for department scholarships was February 7, 2013. The online application form is now closed and will be reactivated on November 15, 2013.
Selection process. The selection of a student to be awarded a scholarship will be made by a committee designated by the chairperson of the Department of Mathematics. The decision will be made on the basis of:
- Two professional references
- Grades in university/college courses, especially mathematics
- University/college mathematics courses completed
- A paragraph written by the applicant
- Other factors
Descriptions and qualifications for each of the Department of Mathematics scholarships are listed below.
Miller Mathematics Scholarship
Eligibility: The recipient will be a student who has
80 or more credit hours, has completed at least two semesters at CMU
and is a mathematics, statistics or actuarial science major. Recipients
must demonstrate financial need. Preference shall be given to students
who have graduated from Michigan high schools. The recipient should be a
good mathematics student, however serious consideration will be given
to "late bloomers," students who may not have been strong students when
they began their university studies but have shown steady improvement
and are now good mathematics students.

About: In
honor of Professor William Miller and his wife, Delores Miller, this
award was established in 2005. Professor Miller was a Department of
Mathematics faculty member from 1968-2000. He is a Michigan native who
specialized in mathematics education and has a keen interest in problem
solving.
Amount: The
number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by
the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid.
Richtmeyer Mathematics Scholarship
Eligibility: Underclass students will have completed
or be enrolled in MTH 132 and will have accumulated less than 26
semester hours of university/college credit. Upperclass students will
have completed or be enrolled in MTH 223 and MTH 133 and will have
accumulated at least 30 semester hours of university/college credit.

About: Dr.
Cleon C. Richtmeyer, former dean of the School of Arts and Sciences,
former chair of the Department of Mathematics and a faculty member of
CMU from 1924-1968, bequeathed a scholarship fund for students who major
in mathematics. The fund will be used to award scholarships to students
who are eligible in either one of the two categories, underclass or
upperclass.
Amount: The actual amount of the scholarships will be determined by the available funds and the number of scholarships awarded.
Renewal:
Renewal is possible for a student receiving an upperclass scholarship if
the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA (3.5 in mathematics) and remains a
mathematics major. This second year award will not be automatic;
reapplication is necessary.
Jozefaciuk and Rutkowski Mathematics Scholarship
Eligibility: A recipient must be a junior or senior
with a mathematics major, a Michigan resident and a U.S. citizen, have
at least 56 semester hours of credit,and have a minimum GPA of 3.4
Engineering, computer science and statistics students are also eligible.

About: As a
tribute to Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk, and Irene Rutkowski, their family
created the Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk and Aunt Irene Rutkowski Endowed
Award in 2005.
Amount: The
number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by
the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid.
Serier Mathematics Scholarship
Eligibility: A recipient will be a Michigan resident
with at least 56 hours majoring in mathematics and who has a record of
academic excellence as demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

About: In
honor of Professor Lester H. Serier and his son, Jack D. Serier, the
Lester H. and Jack D. Serier Endowed Memorial Scholarship fund was
established in 2001. Professor Serier was a Department of Mathematics
faculty member from 1939-1980. He served as department chairperson from
1958-1959 and again from 1961-1965.
Amount: The
number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by
the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid.
St. Andre Endowed Award
Eligibility: This non-renewable award is for a
student who has sophomore standing at the time of application and who
has a signed major in the Department of Mathematics. The recipient must
be a Michigan resident and show good potential for being successful in
their major.

About: The
Richard and Karen St. Andre Endowed Award was established in 2004. Dr.
Richard St. Andre was a Department of Mathematics faculty member from
1971 until his retirement in 2008. During that time, he spent several
years in the Dean's Office as Assistant to the Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, Associate Dean for the College of Science and
Technology, and Interim Dean for the College of Science and Technology.
Professor St. Andre is a Michigan native with a specialty in mathematics
education. Karen St. Andre was a local realtor for many years.
Amount: The
number, amount and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by
the Department of Mathematics in consultation with the Office of
Scholarships and Financial Aid.
Whitmore Mathematics Scholarship
Eligibility: A recipient will be a second semester junior or higher with at least 86 semester hours of credit, who has been admitted to Teacher Education, has a declared mathematics major and has a GPA of 3.6 or above in the mathematics major. Student must have at least one year left before graduation.

About: To commemorate the lives of Edward H. Whitmore and Stephen H. Whitmore, the Edward H. Whitmore/Stephen H. Whitmore Mathematics Scholarship Endowment was established in 1993 by family and friends. Dr. Whitmore was a mathematics professor between 1965 and his retirement from CMU in December 1987. He served as department chairperson from 1965-1974 and from 1976-1982.
Amount: The amount and number of scholarships will be determined by available funds.
