The Student Activity Center (SAC) you see today opened in 1990 at a cost of $13.7 million.
The SAC was actually a 179,800 square foot addition to the pre-existing Rose Center. The combined facility covers an area of around 375,000 square feet!
The facility serves over 3,000 users per day and more than 1.5 million visitors annually.
The SAC is home to University Recreation (URec) - one of the top University Recreation programs in the nation!
URec is a member of the National Intramural and Recreational Sport Association (NIRSA) - which means added benefits and unique programs for SAC members!
The Program Desk offers numerous services and opportunities such as sign-ups for group fitness classes, intramural sports, fitness assessments, and workout coordinators.
Memberships for the SAC are offered at various levels for students, faculty, and community members. Memberships for students are included in their university fees.
The SAC was the first collegiate recreational facility to house a bowling center. Our bowling center here is called ULanes. Members and non-members alike can use the facility.
Bowling at ULanes is cheaper than any other bowling facility in Mt. Pleasant. You can even hold a Glow n' Bowl party, birthday party, or group gathering, in addition to regular bowling hours!
Our Fitness Center provides various types of cardio machines as well as weight machines. You can also be entertained by Cardio Theater during those long workouts.
The Fitness Center also offers equipment and lockers available for check-out and reservations for
racquetball courts.
In need of a great workout plan? For a small fee, one of our trained personal trainers can provide you with a customized workout plan to get you on the right track.
Our personal trainers also offer free fitness assessments so you can find out your fitness level and track your fitness progress.
The SAC pool is one of 2 pools in the facility, Rose Pool being the second. The SAC pool is 25 yards long, and also has a 15 person spa and 2 dry saunas.
The SAC pool actually has a hydraulic floor that can be raised to the main deck level to accommodate for younger swimmers taking part in Parent/Infant and Parent/Tot Swim Lessons and also for handicap access to the pool. A great feature for when CMU plays host the Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games each year.
URec offers many swim class opportunities for all ages, infants to adults.
The SAC has 6 racquetball courts that can be reserved in the Fitness Center and can also be transformed into Wallyball courts.
The SAC has a great Cycling Center and also offers group cycling classes at a variety of different times for a small additional fee.
In addition to group cycling classes, the SAC offers a plethora of group fitness classes ranging from aerobics, kickboxing, yoga, and Pilates. Classes are offered for a small additional fee and multi-session punch cards
are also available.
URec's intramural program is one of the largest in the nation with over 1000 teams and over 9000 students participating each year in a multitude of different sports including flag football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, floor hockey, and a ton more. Men's, women's, and co-rec leagues are all available.
URec also has a great sport club program that includes over 40 different teams and over 800 participants. Sport clubs offer a more competitive environment and most every team plays other universities from around the Midwest and the nation. Club Sports hold seasonal callouts which are posted on the club sports page.
The SAC features an indoor fitness walking and jogging track where 9 laps is equal to 1 mile.
The SAC is home to the Michigan High School Coaches' Hall of Fame which can be found at the west entrance.
In the lower level of the SAC you'll find the Weight Training Center which is primarily a facility for free
weight usage.
The ICC in the lower level has trained sports medicine staff that can evaluate injuries and respond
to emergencies.
A little known area located in the lower level of the SAC is the Multi-purpose Fitness Room (MP Fit). MP Fit is a smaller fitness room with weight machines, free weights, and some cardio equipment and is used for academic classes and personal training sessions.
In addition to its numerous program opportunities, the SAC also plays host to many community events such as Siblings Weekend, CMU Up All Night, concerts, school dances, and other external organizational events.
The SAC can offer many different options for meetings, parties, group gatherings, and field trips. What event could be more fun than a day at the SAC?!
