If you are ever in a fire
Get out fast. Fires spread quickly.
Do not stop to take possessions or pets.
Call the fire department from a neighbor's home.
Meet others in the designated meeting area.
If you have to pass through an area that is filled with smoke, stay close to the floor. The air 12-14 inches from the floor will be cooler and cleaner.
Before opening any door, make sure it is not hot. If it is hot, do not open it. Instead, use the alternative exit.
Open a cool door slowly and crawl out of the house.
Poisonous smoke and extreme heat can kill you in a matter of seconds.
Do not go back into the burning building.
If you are trapped
Close doors between you and the fire.
Stuff blankets, towels, or other objects around the cracks in the door and cover vents to reduce the amount of smoke that can enter the room.
Wait at the window and signal for help with a flashlight or by waiving a brightly colored cloth.
If there is a phone in the room, call the fire department and let them know exactly where you are at.
