Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The Santo Domingo Student Teaching Expereince takes place in the fall each yaer.  While on this experience students will have the opportunity to live with a Dominican family with homes centrally located in the city and the schools will provide transportation to and from the /academics/educ_humanservices/EHS---TEPD/EHSTEPD---MidtierExperiences/EHSTEPDME---InternationalExperiences/Documents/dominicanrepublicexp.pdf
schools and lunches on school days.

During this experience student teachers will see different school organizations and methods of teaching subject matter and have the opportunity to get along with people in unfamiliar situations. Such opportunities will help to develop tolerance and self-confidence. Student teachers will be living in a home environment for an extended period of time and, thus, experience learning in greater depth than a travel/study course. International experiences help student teachers prepare for changes in American culture and society that may likely take place during their lifetime. A worldview is a desirable and much neglected goal of our American educational system. This experience will broaden the student teacher's worldview.  Also, student teachers are more marketable with an international experience. The international experience provides an added dimension to a student's teaching background which interests prospective employers.

Excursions will be planned and are included in the cost of the program. Due to field experience schedules, excursions may vary. Possible excursions include the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, Altos de Chavon, Las Terrenas, El Limon, Luperon, Sousa, Cabarete, Bocco Chicha and Guayacanes.
