Central Michigan University College of Medicine (CMED) will admit students who have the potential to become outstanding physicians.  Our mission is to recruit high caliber students of who will develop the ability to practice medicine in Michigan, the United States, and the world.  A primary goal of the College of Medicine is to increase the number of physicians that serve central and northern Michigan and CMED will place a high priority on selecting students who plan to practice in underserved communities in these Michigan regions.  

CMED will use a holistic admissions process, and will seek to admit students who have personal characteristics and interests that align with CMED's mission.  This admissions process is designed to consider an individual's application holistically, including cognitive capabilities, the depth of past experiences, and personal attributes and characteristics.  It balances the applicant's academic portfolio with other aspects of their application, such as the capacity for using critical thinking and logic, the understanding of the principles of ethics, personal values, and the qualities that show an applicant's potential to become outstanding physicians.

To be eligible for admission to CMU CMED, applicants will be required to:

1. Submit all necessary information through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).

2. Complete and submit scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) with a minimum overall score of 24.

3. Complete an undergraduate baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 3.25 or higher; honors courses will be highly regarded.

4. Course requirements and recommendations - In addition to the required courses listed below, applicants should be successful in a variety of courses, with significant experience in upper level courses, and applicants should take courses that will help to prepare them for the medical curriculum and the MCAT.

The college courses that will be required for admission to the College of Medicine include:

• Biology, two semesters (including labs)
• Organic Chemistry, two semesters (including labs) -OR- Organic Chemistry, one semester and Biochemistry, one semester (including labs)

The college courses that are recommended for preparation for the College of Medicine curriculum and/or the MCAT: include:

• Inorganic Chemistry
• Biochemistry
• Physics
• Behavioral Sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology)
• Medical Humanities
• Communications
• Ethics
• Biostatistics

5. Three letters of recommendation.  Each letter should be written by an author who is known through a professional relationship, and must have firsthand knowledge of the candidate's qualifications, skills, attributes, and values.  Authors must be professionals whose background enables them to determine the applicant's qualifications.  If students apply from a university that provides a composite letter from a premedical program, the composite letter will be accepted.  A maximum number of 5 letters will be accepted.  Applicants are encouraged to have letters prepared as early in the application process, and include their social security number and/or AMCAS ID numbers on the letters.  All letters must be received through AMCAS using one of their acceptable forms of receipt.

6. Document 200 hours of combined experiences in a health and/or medically related field, and community service (i.e. community service that exposes a student to health and medicine can be used to help meet this requirement).  These experiences should provide an understanding of the roles of physicians in clinical and community settings, patient and population health issues, and how healthcare teams function.

7. Select applicants will be invited to continue the application process by submitting a supplemental application.  The supplemental application will be emailed, and the deadline for receipt of the supplemental application is January 15, 2013.  A nonrefundable fee of $100 is required.  Applicants who have received an AMCAS fee waiver will also receive a fee waiver from Central Michigan University.
