CST Outstanding Teaching, Research & Service Awards
Each year the College of Science and Technology recognizes exceptional professors with the CST Awards for Outstanding Teaching, Research, and Service.
Outstanding Research • Jennifer Schisa, biology associate professor
Jennifer Schisa, associate professor of biology, was selected as a winner of this year's Research Award for her excellent and sustained research productivity, her great success in obtaining external funding, and her work supervising students. Since coming to CMU in 2002, she has been an outstanding contributor to the research efforts of the Department of Biology.
Outstanding Teaching • Anna Monfils, biology assistant professor
Anna Monfils teaches courses in botany, systematics and electron microscopy. She has developed novel methods of stimulating student learning in her courses. Monfils is a dedicated mentor, working with undergraduate and graduate research students to train them in all aspects of scientific work, from grants through presentations.
Outstanding Service • James Gillingham, biology professor
James Gillingham, the former director of the CMU Biological Station on Beaver Island, has applied his professional expertise and passion for biology and herpetology to help numerous community organizations and educate countless school groups throughout the state. His dedication to the station has built strong relations with the Beaver Island community, as well as with friends and alumni of CMU.
Elizabeth Alm, biology professor
Elizabeth Alm is an enthusiastic teacher of microbiology. She is known for using innovative approaches to make sometimes-difficult information understandable, and conveys the importance of microbes to people. Alm works closely with upper-level students to teach laboratory skills and has mentored dozens of research students, most of whom present or publish their work.
Tracy Galarowicz, biology assistant professor
Tracy Galarowicz teaches a variety of courses in fisheries, ecology and conservation. She inspires student learning using creative and innovative techniques, and students uniformly speak highly of her teaching effectiveness and enthusiasm. Galarowicz has supervised undergraduate and graduate research students, several of whom received grants and presented or published their results.
