Escalating Demand

Biology is one of the largest and most rapidly growing disciplines at CMU. During the past decade (2001-02 to 2011-12):
  • Undergraduate majors have increased 210 percent (total enrollment 280 to 868) and B.S. degrees awarded have increased 47 percent (116 to 170 per year)
  • Graduate students increased 25 percent (48 to 60) and M.S. degrees awarded increased 55 percent (9 to 14 per year)
  • Students taking biology classes increased 28 percent (5,890 to 7,515 per year)
  • Tenure-track faculty have increased 71 percent (17 to 29)
  • External grant funding has increased more than 10-fold ($323,000 to $3.47 million per year)
Brooks Hall is not adequate to house those numbers of students and faculty, nor does it provide the facilities needed for cutting-edge instruction and research in the biological sciences.


On April 11, 2013 the CMU Board of Trustees approved the construction of the new Biosciences Building - the largest capital project ever for the university.
