NSF-REU
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Central Michigan University began in the summer of 2002. The goal of the REU is to stimulate talented undergraduates to learn new mathematics by working on challenging, unsolved research problems.
Professor Sivaram Narayan received a 3-year grant of $283,537 for the period 2012-14. During Summer 2012, twelve students participated in the REU program. Drs. Chin-I Cheng, Erin Militzer, Pete Vermeire and Sivaram Narayan were the faculty mentors for the summer.
The REU program has so far worked with 125 students (62 men, 63 women), of which 89 students were supported by the NSF-REU grants, 28 students from CMU were supported by the CMU Summer Research Scholarships and REU matching funds from the dean of the College of Science and Technology, and 8 international students were supported by their own institutions.

2013 NSF-REU Program: June 10 - August 2, 2013
The Department of Mathematics at Central Michigan University will be hosting a National
Science Foundation summer program to provide Research Experience for Undergraduates.
ApplicationThe application for research beginning in Summer 2013 is now available:
Preference will be given to applications received by
February 22, 2013.
Program
Nine students will be chosen to work with faculty members of the Department of Mathematics. Drs. Leo Butler, Susan Cooper, Lisa Driskell (Visiting Faculty), and Sivaram Narayan will guide the student research.
Requirements
Applicants must have completed a second course in
Calculus and a course in Linear Algebra by May 2013. Individual research
projects may require additional prerequisites.
Topics
The topics to be studied in Summer 2013 will be in the areas of Algebra, Applied Mathematics, Geometry, and Matrix Theory.
Stipend
Each student will receive a stipend of $4,200, a room in an apartment and a meal allowance of about $800. Travel money to the REU site and to make presentations at conferences will also be provided.
Eligibility
Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and will be full-time undergraduates in Fall 2013 are eligible to apply. Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

NSF-LURE
Research opportunities in the CMU Department of Mathematics include collaborating with faculty members and experiencing each step of a research project through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Long-term Undergraduate Research Experience (LURE). This program supports teams of CMU students – for up to two years – to collaborate with mathematics faculty on undergraduate research, with the goals of increasing the number of:
- Undergraduates electing mathematics courses beyond institutional requirements
- Undergraduates and faculty engaging in undergraduate research experiences
- Graduates feeling prepared to pursue graduate work
Through closely supervised research and independent study activities spanning two summers (10 weeks each) and two academic years, students experience all steps in a research project, from background reading to professional presentation of results. The LURE model emphasizes closes mentoring relationships, teamwork and the development of oral and written communication skills.
NSF did not renew the funding for the Long-term Undergraduate Research Experience (LURE) program in 2012.
