The Department of Journalism honored two faculty members for their service. Left, Reynolds Visiting Journalism Professor Micki Maynard cuts the cake the department gave her to celebrate her semester at CMU. She taught two business journalism classes during the spring semester. Right, Professor Doug Berry cuts the cake the department gave him to celebrate his retirement. Berry was instrumental in making adversiting a major at CMU.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., discusses federal issues and why he decided not to seek a seventh term in the U.S. Senate from Michigan with Central Michigan University journalism students in Moore Hall.  Students in lecturer Mark Ranzenberger's JRN 202 class quizzed Levin about taxes, health care, urban redevelopment, the Postal Service and public service. New rules apply to Dec. 2013 graduates

The journalism faculty unanimously agreed at the meeting of the faculty committee on Friday, Nov. 30, that the new ACEJMC rules, allowing students to take 72 hours outside the major and comply with their university’s liberal arts and science requirements (in this case, CMU’s UP requirements), should be implemented from the start of the 2013-2014 Academic Year.

Thus, the new rules will apply to the December 2013 graduates and subsequent graduates. May and August 2013 graduates will comply with the 80-65 rule, thus finishing out the 2012-2013 Academic Year with the old ACEJMC rules still in place.

Under the new rules, starting in the 2013-2014 Academic Year, students may take up to 52 hours under the JRN designator and must take 72 hours from their 124-hour degree programs, outside the major.

Changes allow more journalism classes

Journalism students will be able to take more classes under the JRN designator as a result of revisions to the accrediting standards set by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC).
The revised standards permit journalism students to take a maximum of 52 credit hours under the JRN designator, instead of 44 hours. The minimum of 39 credit hours will remain the same. Students also may take up to six hours of internship credit instead of the current three hours.
