Professor of Flute
Joanna Cowan White, professor of flute at Central Michigan University, has taught at CMU since 1987. She is principal flutist for the Saginaw Bay Orchestra and the Midland Symphony Orchestra and performs with the Powers Quintet, Eclectic Trio, and in the Crescent Duo with clarinetist, Kennen White.
Joanna White can be heard on Flights of Fancy, (Centaur Records 2603), Bremen Town Musicians, (Centaur Records 2774), Woodwind Echoes, (White Pine Music), and The Clarinet Chamber Music of Alvin Etler (Centaur Records). She has performed at the National Flute Association, International Clarinet Association, and International Double Reed Society Conventions and she has written articles for Flute Talk, Flutist Quarterly, The Instrumentalist, and the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal, and the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal.
Joanna White conducts the Central Michigan University Flute Choir, judges for the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, and is currently Secretary on the executive board of the National Flute Association. She received the bachelor of music degree from the University of Southern California, master of music degree from Northwestern University, and the doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Michigan. Her flute teachers include Walfrid Kujala, Janet Woodhams, Patricia Garside, Roger Stevens, Thomas Nyfenger, Judith Bentley, Clement Barone and Leone Buyse.
