The Master of Science Degree in Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Technology is in the Department of Human Environmental Studies and uses a creative and collaborative approach to the study of apparel and textiles. The primary objective of the program is to expand students' knowledge of apparel products – from concept development to retail distribution using advanced knowledge and creativity in design, production, evaluation and technology.

Graduate students in this program will have access to cutting edge technology and research utilizing state of the art facilities and resources as well as an open invitation to join faculty in ongoing multidisciplinary research in the exploration of design issues that interface with the human body.

Graduates of this program will be prepared for executive level positions in apparel and textile product design and development, CAD technology, industry research and development, as well as for careers in higher education and government. This program is also appropriate for those individuals seeking further graduate study at the Ph.D. level.

Thank you for visiting CMU’s web site for the Master of Science in Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Technology (MS in APDMT) program. My name is Candace Maylee. I serve as the assistant coordinator of the MS in APDMT program.

Students completing the MS in APDMT program receive very individualized attention in obtaining their educational goals. This new program, launched in Fall 2008, provides students the opportunity to choose courses that support their specific career objectives within the field.

Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Technology NEWS

Several of our Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Technology (APDMT) graduate students have been recognized by ITAA and represented at their annual conference in Honolulu, HA, November 14-17, 2012.

Mr. Ben Touchette, current APDMT graduate student, received the Oris Glisson Award from ITAA. This highly competitive honor is awarded to a master’s student who has: 1) an academically sound background; 2) a high level of scholarship; 3) great potential for future contributions and leadership in the textiles and apparel profession. Ben is currently working on his thesis in the area of neuromarketing under the direction of Dr. Joy Lee and is a teaching graduate assistant.

Mr. Ian Mull, who just completed his Master’s in Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Technology and is now teaching at CMU, presented two co-authored papers at the conference based on his coursework and thesis. One paper deals with using online social games as a teaching tool for visual merchandising and is co-authored with fellow APDMT graduate student and now graduate, Erica Palentyn. The second paper explores the idea of using 3D avatars as online salespeople and is co-authored with two other APDMT graduates, Jamie, Wyss and Eunjung Moon. Dr. Joy Lee served as Mr. Mull’s graduate advisor and is also a co-author on these papers.

The international conference also hosted a design exhibition displaying selected creative works from a juried international competition in apparel design. The work of two APDMT graduate students was displayed. S.Y. Jung’s design, The Incredible Nature of Hawaii, was in the mounted design exhibition. This work was completed under the direction of Dr. Carol Beard. H. Lee’s, The Hibiscus, was also be in the mounted exhibition. Her work was completed under the direction of Dr. Maureen MacGillivray.
