A copy of your signed teachable major and minor are required to be on file in the Registrars Office, 212 Warriner Hall.

The major/minor authorization forms are standard university forms used to list the courses required for your major(s) and minor(s), and they are signed by a faculty advisor in your major(s) and minor(s) department(s). Your final graduation audit will confirm that you have completed all courses for your major(s) and minor(s). Other requirements for major/minors may include:

• Some departments require completion of specific courses PRIOR to signing the major or minor.
• Maintaining a minimum 2.70 GPA overall in each teachable major(s)/minor(s).
• Meeting all departmental requirements for each teachable major(s)/minor(s) which may include minimum grades in specific courses, higher than a 2.70 GPA overall, completion of specific coursework, and/or proficiency tests.
• Completing 75 percent of the coursework in teachable major(s) and minor(s) prior to student teaching.

Selecting a Major/Minor

Some majors are available only at the secondary level and others are available only at the elementary level. The majority of minors can be taken at either the elementary or secondary levels. It helps to think about what subject(s) you really like to study and enjoy learning. It is important to be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subjects you will be teaching. If you do not think the subject is important and exciting, neither will the students.

If you are seeking a secondary certificate, you will have to choose a major and minor or two majors chosen from a selected list. If you do not find your preferred major or minor on CMU's approved list, you should seek an alternative major or minor with the help of an academic advisor in the Academic Advising Services Office, Bovee University Center - Student Service Court, (989) 774-7506.
