Welcome

The Central Michigan GEMS Education Center is dedicated to the improvement of math, science, technology, and environmental education teaching and learning K-16, and to the associated generation and communication of knowledge about science, math, technology, and environmental education teaching and learning.

The Center accomplishes its mission through the active collaboration among science educators, math educators, scientists, and school-based colleagues.

Great Explorations in Math and Science is an exemplary curriculum. Our network of statewide math and science teacher leaders are a key resource for education throughout the state of Michigan.

Check out our tentative Fall 2012 Workshop Schedule:

Matter

Friday, September 14, 2012(Grades 1-3)
This science unit focuses on the three basic states of matter – solid, liquid, and gas. The unit helps students generate definitions and understandings of the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and apply these definitions and understandings to classification of “challenging substances”.
EHS 129
1:00-4:00 pm
Cost: $10.00
Guide Cost (optional): $14.40
In All Probability

Friday, September 28, 2012(Grades 3-6)
Students dive into probability as they play games using coins, spinners, dice, and Native American game sticks. They investigate chance and probability with concrete materials, learn how to gather and analyze data, make predictions, and draw conclusions.
EHS 129
1:00-4:00 pm
Cost: $10.00
Guide Cost (optional): $18.40
On Sandy Shores

Friday, October 12, 2012
(Grades 1-6)
This workshop dives into the hidden world beneath our feet in this marine-science unit on the marvelous ecosystem we call a beach. Students explore and deepen their understanding of many aspects of the “sand shore”, from grains of sand to commonly found animals to more complex biological and ecological interactions.
EHS 129
1:00-4:00 pm
Cost: $10.00
Guide Cost (optional): $18.40
Secret Formulas

Friday, October 26, 2012
(Grades K-4)
Students eagerly investigate the properties of substances as they make their own personal brands of paste, toothpaste, cola, and ice cream. The activities have been designed to convey key science and math skills and concepts while providing highly motivating real-life experiences with chemistry.
EHS 129
1:00-4:00 pm
Cost: $10.00
Guide Cost (optional): $14.40
Elephants & Their Young

Friday, November 9, 2012
(Grades P-1)
In a series of lively activities, children make model elephants out of paper and cardboard, make elephant sounds, and sing the “Elephant Song”. As they role-play, the children gain insight into how elephants live in the wild. The children also compare themselves to baby elephants in body size, foot size, and weight.

EHS 129
1:00-4:00 pm
Cost: $10.00
Guide Cost (optional): $20.80
Eggs Eggs Everywhere

Friday, November 30, 2012
(Grades P-1)
In a gentle and engaging exploration of animals that hatch, children study real and plastic egg-layers, including turtles, fish, snakes, and birds. Through role-playing, sorting, organizing, graphing, and exploring shapes and movements, students develop an understanding not only of the process of egg-laying and hatching, but of the animals themselves, their roles in the life cycle, and fundamental mathematical concepts.
