Selecting a Grad School

When selecting an ideal graduate school, only you will know what matters most. You should always make sure that the university is regionally accredited, as regional accreditation is what matters most to other universities and major employers. CMU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCAC), and the other regional accrediting bodies have similar names. Many professional degrees have additional accreditations as well, such as AACSB-International, which provides special accreditation to business programs throughout the world. CMU's College of Business Administration, for instance, has this prestigious accreditation, in addition to CMU's regional accreditation from NCACS. A general rule of thumb is to avoid schools with "national" accreditation that do not have regional accreditation as well. When in doubt, just check with any state-based public university to see if they would recognize that accreditation.

Funding is always an important issue when deciding on a graduate school. Many universities, however, provide fellowships and graduate assistantships that let you teach, research, or perform administrative services in exchange for a tuition waiver and a living stipend. Many offer unique scholarships and advantageous loans or payment options as well.

Several search engines are available online to help in your search for the ideal graduate school. Of course, CMU, right here in Mt. Pleasant, is often a perfect choice. But you might want to look elsewhere and explore other options. Popular search engines include:
