CMU's Fall and Balance Clinic (FBC) focuses on fall prevention assessment and rehabilitation for balance disorders, as well as for medical conditions that may predispose individuals to the risk of falling. Among its key features, the FBC:
- Accepts patient referrals from physicians.
- Complements services offered by area health care providers.
- Ranks as a charter member of the Michigan Fall Prevention Partnership.
- Enhances health student education and gives specialized service with state-of-the-art equipment, including a NeuroCom® Unit, which tests balance with a computer evaluation - the only such equipment north of Ann Arbor.
The Fall and Balance Clinic is a collaborative effort of the Carls Center for Clinical Care and Education and the College of Health Professions' Communication Disorders Department and the Rehabilitation and Medical Sciences Department. The FBC is a state-of-the-art clinical and education program providing unique educational and clinical opportunities for students to blend theory with practice by partaking in clinical service to the larger community.
The Fall and Balance Clinic staff of clinical experts offer a comprehensive program for assessing, identifying and treating patients with balance, mobility and dizziness disorders resulting in the loss of functional skills and personal safety. For rapid scheduling, please fax the Fall and Balance Referral Formto (989) 774-1891.
The FBC serves as an advanced training facility providing educational and clinical hands-on training for students and practitioners. The educational opportunities available through the clinic help develop a growing core of expertise in fall prevention and balance assessment among healthcare providers and scholars in a variety of disciplines. Furthermore, the clinic serves as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of fall prevention and balance assessment-related resources and best practices by providing access to information via the web, written materials and workshop symposiums. It is hoped that the FBC community outreach efforts will continue to foster awareness and enhanced health care workforce skills in central and northern Michigan.
Through on-going collaboration of CMU with the community through the university's Fall and Balance Clinic activities, we together can contribute to the reduction in the rate of fatal injuries and not-fatal fall injury hospitalizations in central and northern Michigan.
