Benjamin Ramirez-shkwegnaabi received his B.A. in 1978 and a MA in American Culture/Studies in 1980 from the University of Michigan. He received a MS in Educational Administration in 1983 and a Ph.D In Higher Educational Administration in 1987 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Research and Teaching Interests

Professor Ramirez-shkwegnaabi’s research centers on nineteenth-century Great Lakes Indian history. His specific areas of research include decision-making and gender issues with respect to treaty negotiations in the Great Lakes area. He presented his research findings on Anishinaabe women’s participation in treaty-making at the Nokomis Learning Center in East Lansing, Michigan (March 2006). Professor Ramirez-shkwegnaabi also researches and teaches Ojibwe language classes. In this capacity, his research examines the intersection of Ojibwe language, history, and culture. ​​​​
