I have been a member of
The Compassionate Friends since 1992, having attended my first meeting in July of that year. TCF is a support group for bereaved parents. Two of my children, Michael and Katie, died in an auto accident on June 20 of that year, caused by a speeding youth and a faulty latch on our minivan hatch.
I eventually became the chapter leader for our group. Our group has a monthly support meeting, a candle light memorial service in December, and occasional other activities. Our primary purpose is to provide mutual support as people who have not lost a child often do not fully grasp our experience. I have learned a lot from my fellow members. The following article was in part inspired by my experience with the group:
