Middle
Level Education (MLE)
MLE
570 Issues in Middle Level Education 1-3(Spec)
A focus on current issues in middle level education. Students
will help select specific topics for in-depth study.
Prerequisites: For undergraduates: admission to Teacher
Education, MLE 381, MLE 382, and MLE 383 or permission of the
instructor; for graduates: MLE 641, MLE 642, and MLE 643, or
permission of the instructor. This is a variable
content/variable credit course.
MLE 609 History of Education
3(3-0)
Development of modern education in Western Civilization.
Identical to ELE/SED 609. Credit may not be earned in more
than one of these courses.
MLE 611 Philosophy of
Education 3(3-0)
Major philosophical viewpoints on education are examined with
attention to developing tenable and consistent educational
views. Identical to ELE/ SED 611. Credit may not be earned in
more than one of these courses.
MLE 613 Current Educational
Issues 3(3-0) ELE/SED
Identification and analysis of significant, persistent issues
in education in the United States and the relationship to
student achievement and teacher effectiveness.
MLE 619 Continuing Registration for
Final Research Project 1(1-0)
MLE 641 Young Adolescent Needs and
Characteristics 3(3-0)
An orientation to the unique developmental needs and
characteristics of young adolescents. Prerequisites: None
MLE 642 Concepts, Structures,
and Programs for Middle Level Schools 3(3-0)
An orientation to middle level education which focuses on the
middle level school concept, structures, and programs.
Prerequisites: MLE 641 or permission of the instructor.
MLE 643 Student Diversity
Issues in the Middle Level Classroom 3(3-0)
An orientation to the multiple aspect of human diversity in
the middle level classroom. Prerequisites: MLE 641 or
permission of the instructor.
MLE 644 Issues in Meeting the
Diverse Needs of Middle Level Learners 3(3-0)
Instructional strategies and assessment/evaluation methods and
materials for middle level classroom teachers appropriate for
the unique developmental needs and characteristics of young
adolescents. Prerequisites: MLE 641, 642, 643, 645; or
permission of the instructor.
MLE 645 Middle Level School
Curriculum 3(3-0)
Curriculum for middle level classroom teachers to meet the
unique developmental; needs and characteristics of young
adolescents. Prerequisites: MLE 641, MLE 642, and MLE 643, or
permission of the instructor.
MLE 660 Methods of Educational
Research 3(3-0)
Interpreting research findings, planning and conducting
scientific studies in education. Identical to ELE/SED 660.
Credit may not be earned in more than one of these courses.
MLE 662 Applied Educational
Measurement and Evaluation 3(3-0)
Applications of measurement and evaluation principles to
educational settings with emphasis on construction and use of
achievement tests. Identical to ELE/SED 662. Credit may not be
earned in more than one of these courses. Prerequisites:
Admission to a graduate degree program in education or
permission of the instructor.
MLE 687 Independent Study in
Middle Level Education 1-6(Spec)
An opportunity for students to undertake specialized study in
middle level education. Prerequisites: Approval of Program
Advisor and Department Chairperson.
MLE 698 Thesis 1-6(Spec)
For M.A. students on Plan A. Identical to ELE/ SED 698. Credit
may not be earned in more than one of these courses.
Prerequisites: ELE/MLE/SED 660 .
MLE 755 Advanced Research
Design and Interpretation 3(3-0)
Analysis of research designs, development of measurement
devices and interpretation of advanced statistical techniques.
Identical to ELE/SED 755. Credit may not be earned in more
than one of these courses. Prerequisites: ELE/MLE/SED 660 or
consent of instructor.
MLE 780 Master of Arts
Capstone Seminar 3(3-0)
The MLE 780 course prepares students for a four hour
comprehensive examination by requiring researching,
presentation and discussion of topics in teacher education
literature. Identical to ELE/SED 780. Credit may not be earned
in more than one of these courses.
