Option 1. Study Abroad or in a Culture Substantially Different Than One's Own (At least 3 semester hours): 

At least 3 credits of CMU/International Program studies (or transfer or a departmental equivalent) for any college or university level coursework in any department taken at any institution of higher education located outside the United States or Canada (except Quebec), and approved by the Office of International Education. 

Alternately, at least 3 credits of an internship, practicum, service learning, or other resident program among members of a culture substantially different than the student's own within the United States and approved by the General Education Sub-Committee (see University Programs, H.1.). Note: Under this option, University Program requires at least 27 hours of coursework. OR 

Option 2 Advanced Foreign Language Study (At least 3 or 4 semester hours): 

At least one advanced foreign language class numbered 102 or higher. Note: Under this option, University Program requires at least 27 or 28 hours of coursework. OR
