ART 105 Drawing Introduction 3(0-6) F, Sp A basic introduction to drawing media and techniques, and an exploration of the concepts of space and form in varied subject matters. ART 110 Ceramics I 3(0-4) F, Sp Beginning study of clay as a creative medium in utilitarian and nonutilitarian forms. Problems in wheel-thrown objects and hand built forms. ART 115 2-Dimensional Design 3(0-4) F, Sp Experiencing 2-D order and events by exploring modernist order of elements and principles of design and the non-relational/conceptual order of design. ART 117 Introduction to Contemporary Issues in Art 2(2-0) F, Sp Introduction to the aesthetic theory and visual language of Modernism, Post-Modernism, and Post-Post-Modernism in the visual arts. ART 126 Introduction to the Visual Arts 3(3-0) F, Sp To develop an aesthetic awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the visual arts through an introduction to media, formal analysis, and interpretation. (Group I-B) ART 130 Painting I 3(0-4) F, Sp An introduction to painting with the exploration of media, techniques, and the concepts of space, form, and color. ART 135 Graphic Design I 3(2-2) F, Sp An introduction to the theory and practice of graphic communication. Emphasis is placed on tools and techniques available for the exploration of two- and three-dimensional problems. Prerequisite: ART 115 or permission of instructor. ART 140 Photography I 3(0-4) F, Sp Introduction to basic technical skills of photography as a fine art. ART 150 Printmaking I 3(0-4) F, Sp Introduction to the basic techniques of etching and lithography as a fine art. Prerequisite: ART 105 or permission of instructor. ART 160 Sculpture I 3(0-4) F, Sp Exploration of three-dimensional form and space through individual creative experiences working with various sculpture media. ART 170 Weaving/Fiber Design I 3(0-4) F, Sp Introduction to the floor loom and off loom techniques including basketry, papermaking, felting, dyeing, and spinning. ART 185 Introduction to Western Art, Part I 3(3-0) F, Sp History of Western art from prehistoric through medieval periods. Roots of Western culture as seen in differing artistic styles and attitudes. (Group I-A) ART 205 Drawing II 3(0-4) F, Sp A concentration in experimental media, techniques, spatial relationships, and conceptual processes of drawing. Prerequisite: ART 105, 115. ART 210 Ceramics II 3(0-4) F, Sp Intermediate study of clay as a three-dimensional art medium. Various methods of forming clay, firing kiln procedures, and the mixing of glazes. Prerequisite: ART 110. ART 211 Raku Workshop 3(1-3) D For beginning and advanced students, involving kiln building, firing, glazing, as well as forming. Offered only when weather permits working outdoors. ART 215 3-Dimensional Design 3(0-4) F, Sp Experiencing 3-D order and events by exploring modernist order of elements and principles of design and the non-relational/conceptual order of design. Prerequisite: ART 115. ART 216 Introduction to Figure Drawing 3(0-4) F, Sp Introduction to the study of the human figure in drawing with emphasis on three-dimensional representation, proportions, and anatomical structure. Prerequisite: ART 105. ART 230 Painting II 3(0-4) F, Sp Continuation of the aims of Painting I, with emphasis on personal development. Prerequisite: ART 130. ART 231 Color and Composition 3(0-4) D Principles of color and composition and their application to the media of watercolor, acrylics, and oils. ART 235 Graphic Design II 3(2-2) F, Sp A continuation of 135, emphasis will be on further developing conceptualization and visualization skills. Projects will be directed towards the production of printed materials, posters, and packaging. Prerequisites: ART 105, 115, 135, or permission of instructor. ART 239 Digital Photography I 3(1-3) Introduction to basic skills of digital photography as art. Prerequisites: ART 140 or permission of instructor. ART 240 Photography II 3(0-4) F, Sp Introduction for the intermediate student to new experiences in filmmaking, color photography, and mixed photography media. Prerequisite: ART 140. ART 245 Art for Preschool Children 3(3-0) D Focus is on developmental stages in art of the preschool child. Approximately half the time is devoted to creative activities with art media. ART 250 Printmaking II 3(0-4) F, Sp A continuation of Printmaking I using some new techniques to achieve a more mature expression in prints of fine quality Prerequisites: ART 150. ART 260 Sculpture II 3(0-4) F, Sp Intermediate continuation of those elements studied in Sculpture I. Prerequisite: ART 160. ART 270 Fiber Design II 3(0-4) F, Sp Creating with fiber both on and off the loom. Experiences in two- and three-dimensional form. Prerequisite: ART 170. ART 285 Introduction to Western Art, Part II 3(3-0) F, Sp History of Western art from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. Relations of form and content to cultural attitudes. Unique contributions of map artists. (Group I-A) ART 297 Special Studies 1-6(Spec) D A general introduction to specialized topics, techniques, materials. Studio and/or scholarly areas. ART 305 Drawing III 3(0-4) F, Sp Advanced work relating to Drawing I and II with emphasis on contemporary trends in drawing and a more mature conceptual expression. Prerequisites: ART 205. ART 310 Ceramics III 3(0-4) F, Sp Advanced projects in clay. Emphasis is shifted from purely investigatory exercises in form toward clarity of expression and execution. Prerequisite: ART 210. ART 311 Glaze Composition 3(1-3) D Basic principles of glaze composition in relation to creative work. Prerequisite: ART 210. ART 315 Design III 3(0-4) F, Sp Color phenomena and visual perception applied to art problems. Prerequisite: ART 215. ART 316 Intermediate Figure Drawing 3(0-4) F, Sp Continuation of figure drawing at the intermediate level. Study of proportions and anatomy leading to competency in defining three-dimensional and spatial aspects of the figure. Prerequisite: ART 216. ART 318 Aesthetics 3(3-0) D A philosophical understanding of art and its development. ART 319 Art Criticism 3(3-0) D The description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of visual art. (Group I-B) ART 330 Painting III 3(0-4) F, Sp Emphasis on individual development and refinement of personal expression in various approaches to painting. Prerequisite: ART 230. ART 331 Figure Painting 3(0-4) D Exploring problems of representation, expression, and composition of the human figure in oils and acrylics. Prerequisites: ART 105,130, 216. ART 334 Watercolor Painting 3(1-3) D Exploration of transparent watercolor techniques including dry-brush and mixed-media, and development of an understanding of paper surfaces and pigment compositions. Prerequisites: ART 105, 115, 130, or permission of instructor. ART 335 Graphic Design III 3(2-2) F, Sp Further investigation into the conception and production of a variety of graphic materials as well as research into the continually expanding function of the designer in contemporary society. Prerequisites: ART 140, 235, or permission of instructor. ART 336 Illustration 3(1-3) D Basic methods of black and white and color media illustration techniques for the graphic designer. Prerequisites: ART 105, 115, 130, 135, 140, or permission of instructor. ART 339 Digital Photography II 3(1-3) Mastery of advanced skills of digital photography as art. Prerequisites: ART 239 or permission of instructor. ART 340 Photography III 3(0-4) F, Sp Creative work for the advanced student in developing either photography portfolio projects or film projects. Prerequisite: ART 240. ART 341 History of Photography 3(3-0) D Introductory study of the history of photography from the advent of the camera obscura in the 1550s to the present. ART 345 Art in the Elementary School 3(3-0) F, Sp Art for the elementary child; its relationship to curricula and general development of the child will be investigated through lecture, slides, and team teaching experience. Prerequisites: Admission to the Teacher Education Program or permission of instructor. ART 346 Secondary School Art and Art Activities Affiliation 3(2-2) F, Sp Similar to 345, but applicable to the secondary grades. Students enrolled are required to put in a maximum of two hours per week as teaching assistants. Prerequisite: Major and Minors only. ART 349 Typography 3(2-2) F, Sp Fundamental concepts of typographical composition including history, design, and computer applications. Identical to IET 349. Credit may not be earned in more than one of these courses. Prerequisites: ART 115, 135, or permission of the instructor. ART 350 Printmaking III 3(0-4) F, Sp A continuation of Printmaking I and II using some new techniques to achieve a more mature expression in prints of fine quality. Prerequisites: ART 150, 250. ART 360 Sculpture III 3(0-4) F, Sp Advanced exploration of three-dimensional concepts working with various sculpture media. Prerequisite: ART 260. ART 363 Design: The Interface of Art and Industry 3(3-0) Sp Survey of the development of the applied arts in material culture from the invention of movable type through the twentieth century. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or above. (Group IV-A) ART 370 Fiber Design III 3(0-4) F, Sp Creating with fiber on and off the loom. Experiences in two- and three-dimensional form. Prerequisite: ART 270. ART 375 Surface Design on Fabric 3(0-4) D The application of patterning and color with dyes and pigments through silkscreen, batik, resist tie-dye, and painting on fabric. Prerequisites: ART 115 or 270, or permission of instructor. ART 380 Greek Art and Architecture 3(3-0) D The art and architecture of ancient Greece from the Geometric to Hellenistic periods. Prerequisites: ART 185 or permission of instructor. ART 381 Early Christian and Byzantine Art 3(3-0) D Art of the early church. Byzantine art from the reign of Theodosius I to the fall of Constantinople in the fifteenth century. ART 382 Women and Art 3(3-0) D Women's identities as artists, patrons, viewers, and subjects of representation, their changes historically, and their relationship to definitions of art. Identical to WST 382. Credit may not be earned in more than one of these courses. ART 383 Modern Architecture 3(3-0) D The history of building styles, technologies, and ideas in Europe and the United States from the late 18th century to the present. ART 384 Arts of Non-European Traditions 3(3-0) D An introduction to the visual arts of non-European cultures. Arts of Pre-Columbian and North American Indian, African, Oceanic, and Oriental traditions. Relations between arts, philosophies, and ways of life will be discussed. ART 385 Art in the Twentieth Century 3(3-0) F Study and analysis of the major movements of the twentieth-century visual arts and their philosophies with emphasis on the first half of the century. Prerequisite: ART 285. ART 386 American Art 3(3-0) D A history of American painting, sculpture, and architecture from the colonial period to the present day. An analysis of major artists and regional styles. ART 387 Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas 3(3-0) D Painting, sculpture, architecture, body decoration, textile, costumes, festivals, and ritual in the indigenous cultures of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. ART 388 Pre-Columbian Art of the Americas 3(3-0) D Painting, sculpture, architecture, metalworks, ceramics, masks, textiles, costumes, and festivals of the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas from 2500 B.C. to the Spanish conquest. ART 397 Special Studies 1-6(Spec) D In-depth consideration of specialized topics, techniques, and material in studio, scholarly areas. ART 405 Advanced Drawing 3(0-4) D Exploring more advanced concepts in drawing techniques, spatial relationships, and personal expression. Prerequisites: ART 105, 216. ART 410 Ceramics IV 3(0-4) F, Sp Continued experience in clay as a creative three-dimensional medium with focus on individual problems relating to concepts of form and methods of construction. Prerequisite: ART 310. ART 415 Design IV 3(0-4) F, Sp Continuance of the problematic approach to the desired effective use of elements and principles of design. Prerequisite: ART 315. ART 416 Advanced Figure Drawing 3(0-4) F, Sp Continuation of figure drawing experience at the advanced level. Exploration of figure dynamics, and the application of the theories of foreshortening, and creative composition. Prerequisite: ART 316. ART 430 Painting IV 3(0-4) F, Sp Independent inquiry in painting where the mode of expression is consistent. Regular consultation with instructor is required. Prerequisite: ART 330. ART 435 Graphic Design IV 3(2-2) F, Sp Development of professional skills and attitudes in preparation of a portfolio of work for the competitive field of graphic design.
