Schedules The complete description of the Department of Military Science is found in the College of Humanities and Social & Behavioral Sciences. MSC 100 Introduction to Military Science 1(1-1 ) Introduction to role and organization of the U.S. Army today including characteristics of officer service. Overview of basic survival and marksmanship skills. Laboratory provides hands-on experience. MSC 101 Basic Military Skills 1(1-1) ROTC adventure training for men and women, to include orienteering, basic drill and ceremony, rappelling and first aid. MSC 102 Orientation to Reserve Officers' Training Corps 1(1-1) ROTC from the macro to micro level (national to local battalion). Traces its inception, structure, and functions and impact on U.S. Army and university. Course taught first 8 weeks each semester. Prerequisites: Open to all students; no obligation to enroll in ROTC. MSC 120 Basic Military Leadership I 2(1-2) Introduction to military values, fitness, leadership and tactics. MSC 121 Basic Military Leadership II 2(1-2) Introduction to military leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, group interaction, goal setting, and assessment. MSC 197 Special Topics in Military Science 1-3(Spec) Selected interdisciplinary topics not covered in current course listing. MSC 201 Advanced Military Leadership I 2(2-2) Interdisciplinary approach to organizational leadership and communication concepts. Includes briefing styles, problem solving, assertiveness, organizational culture and change and their impact on the leadership process. MSC 202 Advanced Military Leadership II 2(2-2) In-depth study of the purpose, roles, and obligations of commissioned officers. Includes study of institutional values and their practical application in decision making and leadership. MSC 203 Military Science Basic Camp 3(Spec) Six-week course taught at major army installation under auspices of Army ROTC. Course work parallels subject matter in Basic Program. Students are furnished transportation, room, board, and pay. CR/NC only. Prerequisite: Permission of chairperson. MSC 301 Small Unit Leadership 4(3-2) Builds small unit leadership competencies and facilitates cadet's decision-making, planning and execution processes. Prepares cadets for ROTC Advance Camp and their future responsibilities as Army officers. Prerequisite: Permission of Military Science Chairperson. MSC 302 Small Unit Operations 4(3-2) Intense preparation of cadets for ROTC Advance Camp and their future responsibilities as Army officers. Includes leader's role in small unit team building, training management, and operations. Prerequisite: Permission of Military Science Chairperson. MSC 303 Advanced Practicum in Military Science 1-3(Spec) Su Six-week course taught at a major installation. Includes practical application of leadership principles and techniques. Other subject matter advances material presented in MSC 301 and 302. Students must enroll before course begins. Prerequisites: MSC 301, 302; or permission of chairperson. MSC 397 Special Topics in Military Science 1-6(Spec) Selected topics not currently in course listings. Courses will include lecture, readings, discussion, and research as appropriate. MSC 411 Military Administration I 4(3-2) A study of the fundamentals of military administration. Topics include staff activities, counseling methods, Army training management system, ethical imperatives, and battlefield ethics. Prerequisite: Permission of Military Science Chairperson. MSC 412 Military Administration II 4(3-2) A study of the fundamentals of military administration. Topics include military law, organization for military operations, logistics, entering military service, and a capstone exercise. Prerequisite: Permission of Military Science Chairperson. |
