Graduate Program in PT
The physical therapy program offered through The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at CMU is a professional graduate curriculum three years in length. Graduates of the program are awarded a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (D.P.T.).
The program produces high quality graduates who have performed well above the national and state average on the physical therapy licensure examination. Central Michigan graduates are highly recruited and are employed in all types of clinical settings throughout the state and nation.
The CMU Graduate Program in Physical Therapy has many strengths to offer its students. These include:
- A curriculum that is responsive to the changing environment of health care. Our curriculum is designed to promote the development of students into knowledgeable, reflective, caring, competent and ethical practitioners. The program fosters the development of physical therapy professionals who are committed to lifelong learning.
- A mission that promotes caring professionals. The design of the curriculum promotes the development of physical therapy professionals who are dedicated to the care of their patients and who will contribute to society through both their professional activities and personal commitments.
- Professional leaders. Many Faculty members within the program have assumed prominent leadership roles within their professional organizations. The faculty have contributed to the body of knowledge within the profession through numerous publications and research activities. Students in the program have the opportunity to work with and learn from these professionals.
- Dedicated instructors. The faculty is nationally recognized for their innovative curricular teaching methods. Each faculty member is dedicated to promoting development of students into competent and caring healthcare professionals.
- Facilities that are accessible and house current technologies used in the profession. Current Facilities include a Human Performance Laboratory, Motional Analysis/biomechanics Laboratory, two Physical Therapy Instructional Laboratories and an Anatomy Laboratory with computerized instructional enhancement. In June 2001 the College broke ground on a new $50 million health professions building, where students enrolled in all health professions programs will learn in a cooperative environment.
CMU's physical therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). CAPTE is nationally recognized accrediting agency by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Graduation from an accredited program is required for licensure to practice physical in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
