Summer Speech-Language Specialty Clinics

For more than half a century, the CMU Department of Communication Disorders has conducted Summer Specialty Clinics for children between the ages of 3 and 14 years with communicative impairments. This unique day program has been maintained to provide:

	a combination of communication intervention, social skills instruction, and recreation experiences for children who are communicatively challenged; and
	educational experience for students in the Department of Communication Disorders.

Over the years, this highly regarded program has served more than 5000 children, and has provided practical experience to more than 2000 students pursuing careers in speech-language pathology and audiology.
 
Eligibility
The Summer Speech-Language Specialty Clinics are designed for children and young adolescents with communication disorders who can benefit from an intensive intervention program.

Individuals enrolled in the Summer Specialty Clinics typically receive more intervention during the five-week program than they do in a nine-month school year.

Limited house is available on campus for out-of-town families wishing to accompany their children.

Participation is open to children 3-14 with all types of communication disorders, including:

	Developmental language disorders
	Articulation disorders and Phonological impairment
	Voice disorders
	Speech disorders related to cleft lip and palate
	Motor speech disorders
	Hearing impairment
	Stuttering/fluency impairment

Clinical sessions are half-day (full day optional for 7-14 year olds).  Participants must be capable of working in groups of two to four individuals.

Participant age, and the nature and severity of the communication disorder are considered prior to acceptance. Final enrollment is based on the availability of services needed by each prospective applicant.

Applicant acceptance begins in March. Deadline is May 1 to assure consideration.  Late applications will be processed on a space-available basis.  Due to limited space, early application is recommended. Pre-clinic evaluations are conducted at Central Michigan University during May and June to determine intervention goals and approaches for each applicant.

Costs and Tuition
Families often obtain financial assistance from State agencies or community service clubs. A list of resources is available upon request from the director of the Summer Specialty Clinics. Early and personal contact with such groups is strongly recommended.
