About CHSBS

The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences (CHSBS) is the largest of six academic colleges at Central Michigan University. The college consists of eight academic departments and more than 200 faculty members, many of whom are nationally known authors, active public policy makers, recognized anthropologists and historians, and award-winning psychologists and sociologists.

Study abroad in Germany!Study abroad!
CHSBS encourages students from all majors to study abroad! Several of our departments offer opportunities for international study, including in foreign languages (Spanish, German and French) and history. Students pursuing other degrees may also spend a semester abroad at one of more than 30 countries available through the university's study abroad program.

 

Conduct research in the BRAIN Center.

BRAIN Center
CMU offers a BS, MS, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience. Students work closely with neuroscience faculty and conduct research in specialized laboratories in the Health Professions Building. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary program that integrates academic disciplines of biology, chemistry, rehabilitation and medical sciences, and psychology.

 

Pursue an internship in government officesGovernment internships
The political science department will assist students with pursuing internships at local, state and federal government offices and community organizations. CMU students have worked in law offices, campaign organizations, nonprofit organizations, state legislative and congressional offices, the governor's office, and the White House.

 

Children's Literature LibraryAccess to extensive library resources
CMU students have access to modern library resources as well as a vast collection of historical documents, including more than 7,000 old and rare children's books in the Lucile Clarke Memorial Children's Library (pictured, left) within the Clarke Historical Library.

 

Anthropology LabAnthropology laboratory
Students taking anthropology courses at CMU have access to a hands-on learning laboratory as well as opportunities to complete field work at archaeological sites in South America. Click here to learn more about student research projects in Peru and Bolivia.

 

ROTC Ranger ChallengeROTC Ranger Challenge
The ROTC Chippewa Battalion is a diverse and adaptive organization focused on developing America's future leaders. Students have the option of joining ROTC to earn a commission as an Army Officer or earning a minor in Military Science and Leadership in pursuit of other academic majors.

 

School Psychology Program

School Psychology & teaching majors
The Psychology Department offers doctoral and specialist degrees in School Psychology and seeks to prepare school psychologists to provide consultation, intervention, and assessment services to schools and school children. Students can pursue teaching degrees with majors in English, French, German, history, language arts, social studies and Spanish. 

 

Driving simulator in the DEER Center

Specialized research centers
CHSBS students have access to specialized, hands-on research laboratories, including the Center for Driving Evaluation, Education, and Research (DEER Center) and the Psychological Training and Consultation Center. The DEER Center provides clinical services to evaluate cognitive fitness to drive, education to improve older driver safety, and research opportunities on older drivers and drivers with attention disorders. The PTCC offers clinical opportunities to train students enrolled in the applied graduate programs within the Department of Psychology.

Museum StudiesEarn a minor in Museum Studies!
CMU's museum studies program gives students the practical skills needed to work in museums through planning and installing exhibits, preparing education programs for the public, and caring for the collections.

The History Department offers a Master of Arts in History degree, Graduate Certificates in European, Modern, and US History, and--in consortium with international partner universities--a Joint M.A. and Joint Ph.D. in History.
