Women's Studies Essay Prize
Annual award given to the undergraduate student who writes the best essay on a topic related to women's studies. This prize is administered through the Women's Studies Program.
- Undergraduate students
- Essay can be on any topic related to women's studies. Fiction, poetry and plays will NOT be considered
- Papers must be written for a CMU course and must be submitted no more than three semesters after the applicant completes the course.
- Applicant must be the sole author

Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night is an international rally and march organized locally with the purpose of unifying and empowering communities to combat violence against women, children and families. The event is organized collaboratively by community and campus and other interested persons who are ready to take a stand against violence and make the night safe for everyone.

Dr. Lee Ann DeReus presents "Voice, Power, and the Long Road to Healing: Panzi Hospital and Survivors of Sexual Violence in the DR Congo." She is an Associate Professor of Human Development & Family Studies and Women Studies at Pennsylvania State University-Altoona. She also is a Carl Wilkens Fellow with the Genocide Intervention Network.
An activist-scholar, her current research is focused on survivors of sexual violence in eastern DR Congo. She is the co-founder of Panzi Foundation USA (www.panzifoundation.org) and the cofounder of Beza Kids (www.bezakids.org). She is a featured activist in the 2010 book, The Enough Moment: Fighting to End Africa's Worst Human Rights Crimes, and a frequent guest speaker nationally about the crisis for women in the DR Congo, the genocide in Darfur, Sudan and global activism.
This is one in a series where members of the campus community and greater Mt. Pleasant area gather for a soup luncheon and a substantive presentation on diversity-related topics. Free and open to the public. Brought to you by the Multicultural Center and co-sponsored by Women's Studies Department.

Photographer Peggy Kelsey will discuss her exhibit, "The Afghan Women's Project," which is on display in the third floor of CMU's Park Library until April 17. She will share scenes from the places she visited around Afghanistan, including Talogan in the north, Herat in the west, and Bamyian, the place where Buddhist statues were blown up. One of her goals for the presentation is to dispel several myths about the country and society, including the difference between Islamic Fundamentalism and Traditionalism, stereotypes about Afghan men, the issue of the burka and more.
