Colonel Dyke Heinze retired from the United States Army and accepted a position as an academic advisor with CMU.  Two years later he assumed the newly created position of Associate Director for Leadership in the University Honors Program.  It was in this role that Mr. Heinze assisted in the creation of the Leader Advancement Scholarship and the corresponding protocol.  In 1997 collaborative efforts by the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Residence Life, Minority Student Services, the Honors Program, and others resulted in the formation of the CMU Leadership Institute.  In 2000 Dyke was named the first director of the Leadership Institute.
