Central Michigan University Diversity and Proposal 2

President’s welcome

CMU President Mike Rao
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME:

A more diverse learning and living environment for students, faculty, and staff at Central Michigan University is one of my priorities — an important one. Passage of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative in November 2006 has not changed CMU’s commitment to wholeheartedly embrace and expand diversity while honoring Michigan law. The university has an obligation to prepare students for an increasingly diverse environment and to treat all people with respect.

Discrimination is illegal. Everyone in the CMU community is to be treated with respect and professionalism. Anyone who believes that they have experienced discriminatory behavior should contact the Affirmative Action Office located in 428 Park Library at 989-774-3253.

This Web site is one way to increase communication on campus and in the community about important diversity policies and initiatives.  Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity Dr. Denise O’Neil Green continues to explore ways to expand diversity in our environment.  Anyone who has questions or ideas may contact her at 989-774-3700 or green1do@cmich.edu.  Additionally, the institutional diversity Web site can be accessed at www.diversity.cmich.edu.

I ask for your support to ensure that CMU is a university that embraces and appreciates diversity and all people. I also ask for your help in fulfilling the university’s obligation to serve all of its people well by welcoming diverse people who will enrich the learning experience, the performance of our graduates, and our overall environment.

Michael Rao
President

INTRODUCTION:

This Web site has been established to keep the CMU community informed about the impact of the passage of Proposal 2 on the university, and discussions and decisions perpetuated by the amendment to the Michigan constitution.

President Michael Rao established a committee in November 2006 to review the impact of Proposal 2 on the university and to study how CMU can continue to pursue the expansion of diversity on campus within the legal boundaries of the amendment. Members of this committee include Eileen Jennings, Michael Powell, Bruce Roscoe, Maxine Kent, Steve Smith, and Bob Martin.

For information about Proposal 2, updates on the status of various university initiatives, or to read the specific amendment language, please click here.

The University continues to invite questions from members of the campus community. Anyone with questions about whether an identified policy or operation of the University is consistent with Proposal 2 is encouraged to submit the questions to Eileen.Jennings@cmich.edu.
