Admissions

Opportunities for graduate study in education are available for individuals with teaching credentials who wish to design a planned program that satisfies the requirements for continuing professional certification by the State of Michigan or that leads to the Master of Arts degree.

Individuals who have earned an undergraduate degree but have not fulfilled requirements for teaching certification are not eligible for graduate study in the Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development. These individuals may contact the EHS-Center for Student Services, 421 EHS, (989)774-3309 or ehscss@cmich.edu, to learn more about programs available to them which will lead to the initial teaching certificate.

Admission Criteria:

In addition to the Graduate School application criteria students must meet the following criteria In order to apply for admission to TEPD graduate programs:

You must have a valid teaching certificate from Michigan or one of the other 49 states in the US (for the MA in Education Technology you need either a teaching certificate or be employed in an educational capacity within your school, school district, community college, or profession). Graduate Certificate in Education Technology students are not required to have a valid teaching certificate.
You must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

Admission Process:

Apply to the College of Graduate Studies for 'Non-Degree Graduate Status'. Once you have the initial non-degree graduate status, you may take courses. However, you should choose courses taken before admission to a specific program wisely so that they count toward your eventual degree.

Determine the graduate program you are interested in and apply through the College of Graduate Studies for that specific program.

The College of Graduate Studies, once your application, transcripts, and teaching certificate have been received, will forward the information to TEPD. The department chair will then evaluate your credentials and determine your eligibility. Please note that the College of Graduate Studies does not ask for a copy of your teaching certificate. However, TEPD will not act on your application until we receive a copy. Including it with your initial application will decrease the time of the admission process.

Upon acceptance, you will receive a letter informing you of admission and the name of your advisor.

Meet with your advisor as soon as possible to determine the requirements of your individualized program.

Regular admission is required for assignment to a faculty advisor. Since the advisor and student must discuss and sign the program requirements, individuals interested in obtaining a degree should seek admission to the appropriate program early in their studies. The number of prior courses and transfer credits that may be included on the program is limited. Applications for admission to this degree program are accepted throughout the year.
