The CMU Presidency
The president of Central Michigan University is responsible for the
institution's leadership and the daily management of its human,
financial and physical resources so that it accomplishes its
mission as a public educational institution.
The president is appointed and assessed by an eight-member
board of
trustees, which is responsible for setting policy for the
university. The board is appointed by the state's governor with the
consent of the Michigan Senate. The president serves as an
ex-officio, or non-voting, member of the board.
The duties of a university president are broad. CMU's president
represents the institution before a large number of groups and
individuals who are stakeholders in the institution: legislators,
alumni, employers, donors, taxpayers, students, faculty, staff and
many others.
A significant portion of the president's role focuses on external
relations with the university's many constituencies and supporters.
His time is divided between daily and weekly meetings around the
state and the U.S. (and occasionally internationally where CMU is
engaged) and meetings on the university's campus in Mount Pleasant.
The president's calendar is built by a team that evaluates
priorities and does its best to accommodate the vast majority of
requests for his presence and leadership in meetings and events.
The president relies closely on the university provost, vice
presidents, and other staff to manage most day-to-day functions and
matters on campus
