Typewriters vs. Portable Laptop Labs

What is General Education?

General Education is much more than just credits to “get out of the way.” It’s an invaluable part of your degree program.

Your General Education courses provide a broad educational foundation that provides the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful life and career.

You will learn about forces, ideas and values that shape the world and about the structure of organized human knowledge. And you will have opportunities to:

• hone your communication skills;
• develop your quantitative skills;
• enhance your ability to find information, think critically, and solve problems;
• widen your perspective of cultures within the US and across the globe; and
• explore interests outside your major.

Is It Time for a Change?

Program History
The current General Education Program — including the competencies and the UP — has been in place for 30 years.  The world is far different today than it was in 1977.  The expectations of students, employers, and faculty members have all changed since then, and there have been many advances in technology and pedagogy.

The Academic Senate is reviewing possible changes to the GenEd program.
