When contacting your elected official, take advantage of the
following tips:
- Always include your last name and address on the letter.
A letter cannot be answered if there is no return address or
the signature is illegible.
- Be friendly and respectful. Remember, your actions,
tone, and attitude will reflect upon you and CMU.
- Be brief. Write one page with a short opening and two to
three paragraphs on the subject. Feel free to use our sample
letter or our advocacy talking points.
- Be candid and personal. Include how you have benefited
from CMU and higher education in general.
- Inform the CMU Government Relations staff. Please let us
know of any contacts you make and any response you receive
from an elected official. We need to track communication
from legislators.
