What is SRCEE?

SRCEE is the Student Research & Creative Endeavors Exhibition. It is an opportunity for Honors students to share their research, scholarly and creative endeavors with a professional audience and the university at large. It is held at the Student Activities Center in April. All Honors students should present their senior project at SRCEE.

I have heard that an Honors class is more difficult than a non-Honors class. Is this true?

No. Honors classes have a qualitative difference, not a quantitative difference. You can do things in a class of 20 that are difficult to do in a class of 80 or 100. For example, Honors classes offer more site-visits, field trips, group work, and special projects. Honors classes are not lecture courses—they involve a high degree of class discussion and individual contact with the faculty member. Honors students tell us they prefer to take Honors classes rather than non-Honors classes. A recent study showed that Honors grades in Honors courses are at least equal to if not higher than grades awarded in non-Honors sections of the same classes.

Will being an Honors student delay my graduation?

For most students the answer is no. During your first semester, our academic advisor, Ken Rumsey, will assist you in completing an academic planning document that maps out all the classes you will need to graduate from CMU—semester by semester. With careful planning, most Honors students are able to double-count their Honors courses with the courses they already need in order to satisfy the University Program and competency requirements, as well as their major and minor. Once all double-counting is done, some students will still need to take an additional foreign language course and HON 499, the senior research project course to complete the Honors Protocol. However, most students have a number of “general electives” in their field of study and that is how these two courses might “double-count.”

Will I have to live in Honors housing if I am admitted to the Honors Program?

Honors housing is available for Honors students who choose to live there. The two residence halls are Larzelere and Trout. The advantages of Honors Housing are that the Honors Program Office is located in Larzelere Hall, and you would live and study with fellow Honors students. Many Honors students want to take advantage of Honors Housing. However, for a variety of reasons, we also have Honors students living in every residence hall on campus and even off-campus.

I am in a residential college, so I thought I couldn’t be part of the Honors Program. Is that true?

No. Many Honors students participate in the Residential College programs. Those students live in the hall where their residential college is located, but they still take Honors classes and participate in Honors events.

What options do I have to complete my foreign language requirement?

We require each Honors student to take two semesters of a single foreign language at the college level. There is no way to Clep, AP, or test out of this requirement. The languages CMU offers include: French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Ojibwe, and Chinese. We will also accept American Sign Language courses to fulfill this requirement. If you choose to study abroad, and many Honors students do, then we will accept your study abroad experience as half of this requirement. For example you could take one semester of French and then go to France and your language requirement would be fulfilled.
