CMU's Science/Mathematics/Technology Center received funding from the Michigan Department of Education to provide leadership in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and curriculum development. Claudia Douglass, associate dean for STEM Education and Science Initiatives, and temporary faculty member Kaye Hemerline received the grants, representing the SMTC.

The SMTC participates in the statewide Math/Science Center Network, working with colleagues to improve science and mathematics education. As a member of the network, the SMTC provides leadership in the area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and curriculum development.

The SMTC provides programming for pre-K through 12th-grade students and professional development for CMU preservice and area inservice teachers. It also serves as a resource clearinghouse for teachers, students and parents. This year in particular it will spend considerable time developing a new five-year strategic plan that supports the K-12 schools and their teachers as well as CMU preservice teachers.
